Geology is the study of Earth. It is a science through which one can learn about the physical structure, history, and core of the Earth. Climate change is a critical issue currently and the concern for the exhaustion of limited resources like coal, natural gas, and petroleum is increasing. Through Geology, challenges like climate change, land degradation, over-exploitation of resources, and groundwater conservation can be addressed. Geologists are responsible for studying and understanding the source of the atmosphere, oceans as well as continents. Through the science of Geology, suitable areas for constructing bridges, railway tracks, buildings, and rocks can be assessed. 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • The candidate must have completed the Class 12 examination or an equivalent examination from a recognised board.
  • The candidate should have scored a minimum of 40 per cent in the qualifying examination.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

  • Environmental Protection : Environmental protection is an important sector within the field of Geology. The environmental protection aspect of Geology has reduced the impacts of mining and has helped create awareness regarding climate change.  
  • Disaster Detection: Geology plays a huge part in disaster detection. This field of Geology deals with monitoring and forecasting information and keeping the exposure to any risk in check. This area of Geology deals with creating awareness and prevention of possible disasters and ensuring overall safety. 
  • Oceanographer:An oceanographer is a scientist whose job is to study and analyse the ocean. It is their job to examine the chemical and physical qualities to find out the effect of these properties on weather and climate in coastal areas. They study every aspect of oceans like the marine ecosystems, ocean currents, and ocean floor features. Oceanographers also have to assess the effect of pollutants on the quality of water and predict the changes in weather to forecast any hazards. For an oceanographer, having strong communication skills, critical thinking, research and technical and computer skills are important  
  • Seismologists: Seismologists are the ones who are responsible for studying earthquakes as well as other related phenomena, like tsunamis. It is a type of Geology through which data about the earth’s crust is gathered through seismographs and other instruments. Their job is to predict earthquakes, researching their causes and effects. Part of their job includes identifying patterns in earthquakes to help prevent them and create awareness. Having a minimum qualification of a bachelor’s degree in Geology, physics and other related fields is important. Having excellent communication skills, observation skills, data analysis and research abilities are of utmost significance for a seismologist. 
  • Meteorologists: Meteorologists are responsible for studying the patterns of land and atmosphere, particularly the climate and weather. Their job is to predict and forecast the weather. Part of their job is to analyze and record data from satellites, radars and global weather stations. As their job requires them to use computer modelling applications for predicting the weather, being adept with up-to-date technology is essential for a meteorologist. Being a team player, having the problem-solving ability with strong analytical skills and being proficient in mathematics is necessary for a meteorologist.
